Inside and Outside the Picket Fence
There is nothing like a rainy workday at the Arboretum to spur our volunteers into taking down the Christmas decorations and begin discussing gardening ideas and plans for the spring.
We are excited to kick off our 2019 Nature U Series of informative classes on Saturday, Jan. 19.

Cancer brings a new perspective to life
It started in October when I noticed a marble sized knot under my left jaw. The journey began that day.
My local physician, Dr. Scott Olson, decided I needed to have a CAT scan, which I did get at UT Health Quitman. After the scan was inconclusive, Dr. Olson sent me to see an ear, nose and throat specialist in Tyler, Dr. Michael Lewis. While there, Dr. Lewis ordered a biopsy of the knot. After five attempts, Dr. Lewis still was not happy with the results, so I was sent to UT Health Tyler for a core biopsy.

Quitman Library Connections
Quitman Public Library staff and volunteers would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year 2019! The library will be closed Tuesday, Jan. 1 for New Year’s Day.

We made it through the holidays. A new year is on the horizon!
As you may have noticed, we were closed Saturday, December 22. We will be closed on Tuesday, January 1 for New Years but will reopen on Wednesday, January 2 at 9 a.m.

Corner Column
Earlier this year, about 43 miles northeast of Mineola in Monticello, a coal-fired power plant was mothballed. Two additional coal-burning plants, one southeast of Corsicana and another northeast of Austin, also closed in 2018.
