Commissioners thank Jeanes for his service to Wood County

Last week’s meeting marked the last Commissioners Court session for County Judge Bryan Jeanes. To honor him, he was presented a plaque for his 16 years of service to Wood County. “It’s a pleasure to work with these guys. This is truly a family. I am a cog in the machine. It’s been a privilege to serve all of you,” Jeanes said. County Judge-elect Lucy Hebron will step into the role on Jan. 1. more

Quitman Arboretum changes name to Wood County Arboretum

To better reflect the services provided, Quitman Arboretum and Botanical Gardens will become Wood County Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. Deanna Caldwell, president of Friends of the Arboretum, made the announcement at the Stinson House’s holiday open house. more

Waste district offers recycling for used Christmas wrapping

If you need a place to take your used Christmas gift paper and boxes, the Upper Sabine Valley Solid Waste Management District has a recycling center available seven days a week. The service is free. Place the recyclables in appropriate marked bins. The recycle center is at 111 West Side Drive in Quitman. Hours are 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. every day. more

County 4-H’ers advance to District Food Show

Wood County 4-H held its annual 4-H Food Show on Monday, Nov. 26 for members who have been participating in the Food/Nutrition project. At the Food Show, the 4-H’ers were judged in an interview setting on the food they had prepared and the members knowledge of its nutritional value, food safety, and the MyPlate recommendations. more

Wood County extension service gives annual report

Representatives from the Wood County division of the Texas AgriLife Extension Service gave their annual report for the year at last week’s Wood County commissioner’s court. Angie Monk, family and community health agent, said they’ve worked with the local Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program, Head Start, and Better Living for Texans. They’ve also been involved in food safety and offering alternatives to lessen screen time for kids. more

Commissioners approve jail plumbing emergency repairs

In a special meeting Monday, Wood County commissioners approved emergency repairs to the sewer system at the jail. more

Holly Brook to offer quilting classes

Holly Brook Baptist Church will offer a quilting class starting in January. Participants will learn how to make a “block of the month” for a quilt top to be completed at the end of 2019. Call the church office for more information: 903-769-2091. more
