The magical year for country song artist Kacey Musgraves continued Sunday at the 54th Academy of Country Music Awards. Musgraves, who grew up in Golden and attended school in Mineola, was named Female Artist of the Year. Her critically acclaimed album Golden Hour was selected Album of the Year.

All told, Musgraves, who began writing songs at age 9 and worked under the tutelage of local music guru John Defoore, was nominated for five CMA awards. Country star Miranda Lambert of Lindale was also nominated for Female Artist of the Year, along with Ashley McBride, Carrie Underwood and Maren Morris.

Golden Hour also captured album and country album of the year at the Grammy Awards in February. more
The Sabine River Authority of Texas’ lakeside complex will serve as headquarters for the Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest at Lake Fork in May. The Wood County Commissioners Court OK’d an agreement last week.

Texas Fest is scheduled May 2-6 as one of nine regular season tournaments in this year’s Bassmaster Elite Series. The Wood County Industrial Commission has agreed to be lead host on the 2019 Bassmaster Texas Fest at Lake Fork in conjunction with Emory Tourism and the Lake Fork Chamber of Commerce. more

Inside a classroom adorned with models and cutouts of superheroes, 6- and 7-year-olds wear headphones, peer at a computer screen and learn rudimentary computer coding.

For 47 minutes each week, more than 100 second-graders at Mineola Primary School learn the elementary building blocks of computer technology. The kids are a long way off from understanding how to write complex computer programs, but they do grasp a fundamental understanding:

“They realize they’re actually making things happen,” says Kaye Morris, a primary school technology instructor. “They see the end results of the sequencing.”

Across America, schools are investing in technological training and education of children at a young age. Mineola, which prides itself for its technological innovation in the classroom, is no different. It sees learning the language of computers as a foundational skill for competing in the world of today and tomorrow. more
Brenley von Reyn of Quitman FFA won grand champion steer at the 2019 Wood County Junior Livestock Show hosted by Wood County 4-H at the Quitman ISD Ag Pavilion from April 4 to 6.

She was one of scores of students who brought their animals to Quitman to take part in the countywide show.
