Despite increased competition, Quitman Young Farmers still brought home the bacon at the 2019 Spring Livestock Show on Feb. 23. The show, hosted by Quitman, had a total of 177 entries, an increase of 50 compared to last spring’s livestock show. The Wood County Industrial Commission established bylaws in 1992 with the purpose of undertaking ways of promoting development of business, industry and commerce in the county, including new and existing businesses. Discussions to have a WCIC full-time economic development employee started in 1995. In February 1996, WCIC director Robie Ingle presented a budget for the reminder for 1995/96, and it was approved in commissioners’ court. more
Traffic stops by police departments in Mineola and Quitman in 2018 tracked proportionately with the demographics of those cities. Also, neither police department reported any instance of bodily harm arising from a traffic stop.

The Texas Legislature passed a law in September 2001 that prohibits racial profiling by Texas peace officers. Since then, police agencies in Texas have been required to collect citation-based contact data for the purpose of identifying and addressing (if necessary) concerns regarding racial profiling practices by police officers. more
A Mineola motorist was involved in an automobile accident Saturday, March 2, in Upshur County that claimed the life of an 18-year-old Big Sandy man, according to the Department of Public Safety (DPS). Joshua Lee James Odum died Sunday, March 3, at Christus Mother Francis Hospital-Tyler, where he was taken after the crash, according to the DPS. more
February 26 1:46 a.m. An officer responded to a suspicious person in the area of West Blair Street when a resident reported someone was throwing things at her window screens. An officer patrolled the area, but did not observe anyone in the area. more
Between the dates of Feb. 20 and Feb. 26, Wood County sheriff’s deputies responded to multiple agency assists that included the following: Alba Police Department, Mineola Police Department, Emergency Medical Services and Child Protective Services. Between the dates of Feb. 20 and Feb. 26, Wood County sheriff’s investigators obtained nine arrest warrants and arrested the individuals filed two cases with the District Attorney and recovered $10,900 worth of stolen property. more
