Establishment of a Career and Technical Education (CTE) hub in Mineola took a significant step forward Monday when the MISD school board unanimously gave Supt. Kim Tunnell the green light to negotiate purchase of the former UT-Health clinic building just north of town.

The building, which is owned by UT-Health East Texas, would cost the school district about $150,000 in cash. UT-Health also would receive $300,000 in marketing considerations, which would include such things as naming rights and advertising. The roughly 7,000-square-foot building rests on about seven acres just north of Lake Brenda along Texas Hwy. 37. The building was once a clinic, but as of late it’s been used for storage.

The building could wind up being a permanent home for CTE classes or a temporary space.

“It could be short-term, but it also could be long-term,” Tunnell said after the meeting. more
