“I think about everything I have to do before I start…the run, the plant…I visualize it all. Once I start my run, I don’t really think about it. I block everything out and my body takes over.”

That’s how Abeni “Abby” Kratzmeyer describes the process of making a successful pole vault. The two-time Class 3A state pole vaulting champion continued: “You know from the plant if the vault will be a good one.”

She described the moment before freefall as “very exciting with plenty of adrenalin.”

The Rains Ladycats shut the door on Mineola’s softball playoff run with a 7-0 defeat of the Lady Jackets in regional quarterfinal action May 10.The Lady Jackets had no answer against Rains ace Chanlee Oakes, who threw a one-hitter with six strike outs and only one base on balls.

Oakes was nearly untouchable on the night. She was in command of the strike zone, and when she did miss, she missed off the plate, leaving little for the Lady Jackets to drive. Although she possessed a very good fastball, her speed of delivery was truly unique. Her extraordinarily quick delivery put the ball on the hitter a split second earlier than they anticipated. more

The Mineola Lady Jackets will meet an old nemesis, the Rains Ladycats, in the regional softball quarterfinals Friday, May 10. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Whitehouse High School. Mineola advanced to the regional playoff after a convincing 8-1 win Friday, May 3 over the S&S Consolidated Lady Rams. Once again, Mineola ace Anna Westberry enjoyed a stellar night. She recorded 11 strike outs and one-hit the Lady Rams.

Mineola played a disciplined game, committing no errors and spreading six hits over seven innings. Emily Wiley and Breanna Wilmoth each chalked up two hits.

Mineola and Rains met twice during district play with Rains taking both games: a 9-0 win March 12, and 7-1 win April 5. more
