Brandon Cobb, an elite angler from South Carolina, won his second Elite Series bass fishing title after becoming champion at the Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest at Lake Fork on Monday.

Cobb reeled a four-day total of 114 pounds of bass while competing May 2-6. With his first-place win, he earned $125,000 in prize money. He won his first Elite Series just last month at Lake Hartwell in South Carolina.

“This week just fell into place,” Cobb said of competing and winning Texas Fest. “It has been awesome.”

In addition to the championship, Cobb also caught the heaviest bass (11 pounds and one ounce) of the tournament, which earned him a 2019 Toyota Tundra. The 11-pounder was a personal best for the fisherman.

“That’s the biggest fish I’ve caught, and this lake is unbelievable,” Cobb said at the third weigh-in on Sunday. more

A host of local high school athletes snared gold medals at the UIL area track meet at Rains High School on April 18.

Individual Alba-Golden, Mineola and Quitman gold medal winners included: Lizzie Hallman (Alba-Golden) 16-2 in the long jump, Meghan Brewington (Mineola) 2:27.47 in the 800 meter run, Abby Kratzmeyer (Mineola) 12-00 in the pole vault, Alaina Lopez (Mineola) 50.67 in the 300 meter hurdles, and Brooklyn Marcee (Quitman) 16.90 in the 100 meter hurdles. more

The Mineola varsity boys and girls track teams were crowned champions of district 12-3A at the district meet hosted April 11 at Rains High School.

It was the first district championship for girls track and field in the history of the program. Head coach Bill Self stated, “This year we had the numbers, talent, focus, and work ethic to win the first girls team district championship.”

Alba-Golden captured second in the girls meet, and Quitman placed fifth. In the boys meet, the Bulldogs took fourth and Alba-Golden finished fifth. more
