Quitman ISD will celebrate its 2018 homecoming on Oct. 5 with a parade and more. Students will choose from the following seniors for 2018 Homecoming Queen. Those nominated for queen are Utopia Henry, Lilie Dannon, Mikayla Hubbard, Jakelin Silva and Destiny Mcgee. Seeking to be king are David Tarno, Gavin Derryberry, Jacob Day, Jeremy Peek and Josh Medlin. Representing their respective classes as Duchesses and Dukes are juniors Whitnee Weiher andNick Barnett; sophomores Cristina Ramirez and Silvano Castillo; and freshmen Brooklyn Marcee and Wyatt Hightower. more
The Hawkins Hawks moved their record to 2-3 this year with a convincing 22-7 win at home against Como-Pickton. The Hawks have a bye this week before starting district play at home against undefeated Union Grove (5-0). The Hawks district is one of the state’s toughest Class 2A DI groups. After Union Grove, the Hawks have Cushing, Big Sandy, Alto and Carlisle. more
After spotting District 10-3A DII favorite Harmony a 28-0 lead at the half, the Alba-Golden Panthers battled on even terms the rest of the way before finally falling 35-7 in a rugged district opener. The Panthers had to open district play on the road in a place where it is tough to play. more
It was a beautiful week to fish Lake Fork TX. The weather cooled down which helped keep the water temperatures in the lower 80’s. Even though we had some rain this week, the water clarity is great for Bass fishing. Now that we are through the Big Bass Splash, we can get into some good Bass and Crappie fishing. This was not a good week for Wood County football teams. Of the five teams in the county, only Hawkins came away with a win in their 22-7 win over Como-Pickton raising their season total to 2-3. Coach Scott Evans, his staff and the Hawks are to be congratulated on their efforts and the big win. more
The Alba-Golden Lady Panthers closed out the first half of District 12-3A volleyball with an exciting five-set 3-2 win over Rains taking the fifth and decisive set 15-8. The Lady Panthers start the second half of play Tuesday at home against district leader Edgewood (6-0) followed by a Friday match at Mineola. more
Anyone looking for an evening of exciting, adrenalin-filled fun needs to come out and watch Lady Jackets when take on the Quitman Lady Bulldogs volleyball team. Last week’s match between the Highway 37 county rivals, a match which Quitman won 3-1, demonstrated all the best things about high school athletic competition. Energy, teamwork, focus, emotion … it was all on display by both squads. The scores were 25-13, 25-27, 25-19, 25-22. more
The Lady Jackets wound up their first round of district play with a straight set loss to the neighboring Edgewood squad last Friday. Despite the loss, the Lady Jackets continued to display improved play in a number of areas especially play at the net. more
