Alba-Golden students have returned to school this summer for workouts and drills. The sessions have been drawing 20-30 girls and 40-50 boys in high school and 20-30 junior high students.

Quitman Athletic Director Brian Oakes reported over 50 boys attended each day of early summer conditioning workouts last week. The athletes and coaches were mindful of the social distancing guidelines.

“No stress and no fear,” stated recently-named NCAA all-American pole vaulter Kaylee Bizzell, about her recommendation to young athletes. The Alba-Golden High School graduate was home for a visit from her busy life at Stephen F. Austin University.

Sports to roll back out

In what could be a sign of better times, Mineola youth begin workouts in preparation for baseball tournaments. Though local youth foundations have canceled the summer season, several traveling and tournament teams are gearing up for activity after youth sports restrictions were lifted June 1.
Spring sports were shut down due to the pandemic, and we missed them. With cautious optimism, we now anticipate summer workouts — just around the corner.

Local 4-H’er places 10th

Spring is bass fishing time in Texas. 4-H youth from across the state dusted off their rods and reels to participate in the statewide 4-H Virtual Bass Tournament in March during three Saturday events.
