A-GISD hires search firm for superintendent

Posted

Alba-Golden school trustees hired Texas Association of School Boards to lead the search for a superintendent.

The board heard presentations from TASB representative Joe Dan Lee and from Arrow Education’s Russell Marshall. The cost for the search will be $5,500 all inclusive.

“I want you to know I am your lead consultant representative and I am the one you will be in contact with during the process,” Lee said. “Your satisfaction is guaranteed. If for some reason the superintendent left in two years we will come back and do a search for free. We have never had that happen, but I want it out there in case we make a mistake and it’s the wrong person and it doesn’t work out.”

Lee went through the timeline and all the services TASB offers the school district. “I have no other searches going on. I only work in this area, you have my undivided attention,” Lee added.

Election judges for the May 2 school board election were approved. Wanda Gaby was named election judge and election clerks will be Tammy Kirkpatrick, Diane Haisting and Joyce Margos.

All teacher contracts presented for 2020-21 were renewed.

Kevin Wright gave a brief summary of the Texas Academic Performance Report. The report is on the school’s website. Questions were kept at a minimum, and the board will discuss the report in depth at the next meeting.

Alba-Golden ISD extended spring break for one more week. Interim Superintendent Eddie White gave a COVID-10 (coronavirus) update.

“We need to make clear what has happened here,” he said. “This particular virus is very contagious. A lot of people don’t even know they are sick. From what I see today, several people have already extended closings until April 3. The word out there is a possibility we could be out four more weeks. We have plans started for online for everybody. We put out a little this week just to get kiddos, and quite honestly the parents, used to getting on a device and seeing what’s out there and making sure we have got stuff going to them.”

White said plans for the immediate future are being put in place.

“We are looking at having everybody work from home,” he said. “Teachers will work from home. They will work with their students from home with Google classroom. We are going to feed the kids. I can’t see not feeding the kids. I don’t know how many will participate, but it allows us to keep our employees working. When things like this happen the people who can afford the least take the biggest hit. If we have to stay out four weeks, we will have to regroup.”

The district is providing breakfast and lunch opportunities for all students Monday-Friday until the district resumes on-site classes.

Regular bus route services will run to deliver meals to students. The buses will leave the school at 10 a.m. There will be drive-through services available at the school between 10 a.m. and noon. The meal will consist of a breakfast and lunch in one package.

The board approved going ahead with the district’s plan to be a district of innovation. To begin the process a site-base committee will be formed. The committee will include teachers and administrators from both campuses along with parents and local business people.
