Academic all-state honors awarded
The Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) has recognized Quitman’s Ben Burroughs, River Chaney, Riley Flanagan and Jace Reid as academic all-state student-athletes. Mineola awardees are Zane Bedford, Wylie Franks, Brady Gully and Dalton Rogers.
An often overlooked aspect of scholastic sports is the demands placed on students’ time and the corresponding challenges of excelling academically. Recognizing this fact, the THSCA awards student-athletes who maintain the highest of academic standards with selection to an academic all-state team.
The program receives nominations from head coaches of the respective sports and adjudicates the relative standings of the nominees. The results include a 1st team, a 2nd team and an honorable mention team.
Academic criteria used in determining the level of awardee are grade point average, class rank and ACT/SAT scores. Each nominee must be a team member in good standing, of high moral character and a senior.
Among the group of 4,403 students nominated statewide from the sports of cross country, football and volleyball are a small percentage who have achieved near perfect academic standing. In 2019 only 3.6% of nominees achieved this highest academic standard. They compose the ELITE Team. Quitman’s Jace Reid, nominated through the cross country program, has reached this pinnacle achievement.
