Academic, speech students take honors

Quitman, Alba-Golden and Mineola UIL academic and speech students returned from the recent 3A district meet at Grand Saline with many medals and advanced to regional competition.

Quitman Current Issues and Events team placed first and advanced to region. Jeremy Peek placed first and Jacob Day placed third individually. Peek and Day both advanced to region.

Kaden West of Alba-Golden placed fifth in Current Issues.

Alba-Golden Calculator Applications earned second place team at district. Cameron Galyean placed first and Isabella Crawford placed third. Galyean and Crawford advanced to region. The team is a region alternate.

Quitman Computer Science earned second place team. Justin Blalock placed second and advanced to region. The team is a region alternate.

In Copy Editing, Mackenzie Ragan of Quitman came in sixth place.

In Editorial Writing, Alba-Golden student Macie Pendergrass placed fourth and is a region alternate. In Feature Writing, Taylor Ihlenfeldt of Mineola placed fifth.

In Headline Writing, Ragan placed fourth and Mineola student Riley Fowler placed fifth. Ragan is a region alternative in Headline Writing.

In News Writing, Ragan placed third and advanced to region. Luz Tinajero of Mineola placed fourth and is a region alternate. Toni Brannan of Mineola placed sixth.

Mineola student JT Burst placed second and advanced to region in Number Sense. In Mathematics, Burst placed sixth.

In Ready Writing, Mineola student Emily Phonsnosinh placed second and advanced to region. Quitman student Olivia Callaway placed fifth and Alba-Golden student Brianna Carney placed sixth.

In Spelling and Vocabulary, Quitman student Mikayla Hubbard placed fourth and is a regional alternate. Phonsnosinh and Mineola student Autumn Hill placed fifth and sixth respectively. Mineola earned second place team and is a region alternate.

Mateo Renaud of Mineola placed fourth and is a region alternate in Science.

Quitman student Jeremy Peek placed first and advanced to region in Social Studies.

Mineola students Armando Veloz placed first and Sunni Ruffin placed fifth in Informative Speaking. Veloz advanced to region.

In Persuasive Speaking, Brust placed first and advanced to region. Jackson VanDover of Mineola placed fifth.

In Poetry Interpretation, Preciosa Villeda of Alba-Golden placed third and advanced to region. Makayla Mitchell of Mineola placed fifth.

In Prose Interpretation, Gabe Mullen of Alba-Golden placed first and Anastasia Maloney of Mineola placed third. Both advanced to region. Ellery D’Angelo of Mineola placed fourth and is a region alternate. Cole McKinney of Mineola placed sixth.

The regional contest will be held Saturday, April 13 at Tyler Junior College.
