After winning opening game, Lady Panthers fall to Hawkins
The Alba-Golden Lady Panthers came up short against the host Hawkins Lady Hawks in volleyball action Sept. 6. The Lady Panthers took game one by a score of 25-20, but dropped three consecutive games in a match loss.
All appeared in order at game one. Excellent Alba-Golden service skill combined with strong performances from Laynie Culp and Kaylee Anglin.
Alba-Golden overcame a four point deficit at 12-8 as the game tightened. Anglin broke an 18-18 tie with a nice kill shot. An ace by Bralee Littlejohn and two aces by Ann Marie Pendergrass saw the Lady Panthers home.
The floor activity and rotational skills of the Lady Hawks simply dominated the second game. Hawkins jumped out to a 4-1 lead, and relinquished nothing the whole game. The Lady Panthers were suddenly pressing to do the basics while the hosts were enjoying long runs of success. As the score, 25-10, indicates game two was no contest.
The Hawkins attacking success continued in game three. Alba-Golden coach Jamie Webster implored her charges to “Be smarter!” as they adjusted to the Hawkins attacks. It worked. The Lady Panthers slowly climbed back in the contest. They were within a point before dropping game three 25-23.
Game four decided the match. It was a wild scramble with a few very long volleys and some outstanding defense. Hawkins retained a small advantage most of the game, but a block by Crimson Bryant gave Alba-Golden the edge at 25-24. A combined block by Bryant and Pendergrass tied the score at 26, before Hawkins rallied to take the game 28-26.
