Alba council OKs tentative plans for coffee shop deck

The Alba City Council approved an ordinance about its ordinances Monday and agreed to a plan that will build a patio in front of a new coffee shop in downtown.

The codification of ordinances puts all the city ordinances in one place, which will be helpful for city officials as well as citizens.

City Attorney Jim McLeroy said having all the ordinances in one document will allow the council and staff to begin reviewing them and making changes and updates.

He noted, for example, that when the city recently passed a new truck route ordinance, it does not refer to a prior truck route ordinance that was on the books.

The request to place a patio at 176 Broadway on the west side of the downtown square met with unofficial approval.

The wooden deck will be in front of the sidewalk at the Mining Post, which is scheduled to open in February.

The 12x24-foot deck would eliminate three parking spaces in front of the store, but two other spaces would be gained, including a designated handicapped parking spot adjacent to a handicap ramp.

There are currently no designated handicapped spots in that area.

The council will consider a low-cost lease for the city right-of-way and also require the owner to carry liability insurance.

A special council meeting may be held if the details can be worked out prior to the next meeting Feb. 7.

The deck will be the same width as the coffee shop and extend 12 feet into the street, leaving six feet between it and the driving lane.

It will be about 16 inches above the pavement.

The council also agreed that the area in front of the deck should be striped for no parking.

The deck will have rails, with the only entry being from the existing sidewalk. It will house several tables and chairs.
