Alba-Golden High School plans laid out for year-end

Alba-Golden High School Principal Michael Mize gave an online update last week as the school term nears its completion.

Mize said he could not be more proud of the students who accomplished their school work from home after schools were closed in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.

He commended the parents who rose to the challenge of having their children at home and trying to keep up with school work.

He said the teachers often get overlooked, but he has seen a transformation as they moved to online learning.

Mize said he is excited that the school district is planning a face-to-face graduation for the seniors on June 4.

Mize noted that while the state is allowing districts to proceed with summer school, Alba-Golden does not hold summer school. But the district is considering holding some academic camps, and more information will be available soon.

He said the district is fielding many questions about the return of school.

When and how school might resume is still unknown, but the school board will be asked to consider a calendar at its June meeting that includes a start date of Aug. 13.

The high school will also host an online scholarship night on May 29.

Mize thanked the community for its thoughts and prayers as he went through a two-week quarantine after being diagnosed with COVID-19 on April 23. He was cleared to return to work on May 11.

He said his case was mild, he recovered quickly, and that no one he came in contact with had developed the disease.
