Alba-Golden Lady Panthers defeat Quitman
The Alba-Golden Lady Panthers persevered through a rough first half of play to record a 45-27 victory over the visiting Quitman Lady Bulldogs last Tuesday.
The Lady Panthers jetted out to a 7-0 lead and did not trail in the game. They leveraged a well-applied zone press. Hannah Wright opened the scoring with a bucket off the press. Bella Crawford then hit a 3-pointer and scored shortly thereafter on a nice give-and-go.
In a characteristic early-season start, both squads struggled with ball handling and turnovers in the first half. The competition was physical and full of whistles.
At the quarter break Alba-Golden led 9-4.
Lady Panther Hannah Wright had a huge night. In addition to her 10 points from the field, she recorded steals, was a presence inside and ran the floor. Two excellent sequences thrilled the home crowd on back-to-back possessions. After stealing the ball, Wright found Autumn Whitten with a quick outlet pass and scored with the return pass. Seconds later Wright stole the ball and took it the length of the court for a score.
Alba-Golden led 23-12 at halftime after converting several Quitman turnovers.
Quitman closed the score to 30-21 in the third quarter behind an Ava Burroughs fast break and solid work by Lindsey Hornaday.
The Lady Panthers backcourt dominated the fourth quarter. Crawford and Cacie Lennon combined on three fast break scores, while Whitten hit a nice 15-foot jumper.
The Alba-Golden starting five (Crawford, Lennon, Whitten, Hannah Wright and Kalli Wright) have already shown marked improvement over last season and are playing as a team. Each of the players has advanced their individual games significantly.
Twice in the game, new Alba-Golden coach Dale Clement platooned the second team into action. Although less experienced, their effort and teamwork were of the same quality.
Quitman benefitted from notable play by Burroughs, Hornaday and Kaysi Parker.
The Lady Panthers have opened their 2020-21 campaign 3-0 with their wins over De Kalb, West Rusk and Quitman. The next opportunity to see them at home will be Tuesday, Dec. 1 vs Grand Saline. The Lady Bulldogs will also be at home on Dec. 1 vs Big Sandy.
