• Wood County Democrats will meet tomorrow (Thursday) at First United Methodist Church of Quitman JOY Hall with supper at 6 p.m. and meeting at 6:30.

• The Coke-Pleasant Grove VFD annual fundraiser is Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Coke Community Center at Farm-to-Market 69 and Highway 515. The public is invited to go enjoy Bobby Thompson’s famous chili, stew, cornbread and fixins’. There will be lots of desserts too. Donations will be greatly appreciated.

• Coach Hayland Hardy’s annual Quitman Bulldog Alumni Game will be held Saturday beginning at noon at Tom Brady Field in Dawson Park. There will be a homerun derby and the 2007 Bulldog playoff team will be honored followed by a game between the alumni and current varsity. On-site sign-ups will be at 10 a.m. For information contact Hardy at 903-569-7479.

Special Olympics returns in style

After a five-year absence, over 150 athletes from Como-Pickton, Cedar Creek and Upshur and Wood Counties competed for special recognition at a state-sanctioned Special Olympics track and field meet at the Quitman High School track field on Friday, April 5.

Symphonic band presents Christmas concert

Come on over to Mineola’s beautiful Historic Select Theater and hear the Lake Country Symphonic Band’s Christmasy “Everything Christmas” concert.

Concerts are Sunday, Dec. 17, at 2 p.m. and Tuesday evening, Dec. 19, at 7:30 p.m. Mike Holbrook is back in the director’s seat, so it’s sure to be a fun-filled couple of hours.
