Arboretum fall plant sale Saturday in Quitman

Plant lovers celebrating autumn can harvest a bounty of blooms this week when the Wood County Arboretum and Botanical Gardens kicks off its annual fall plant sale.

Cooler temperatures are expected to provide a comforting backdrop for the popular event Saturday, Oct. 17 at the historic 1869 Stinson House that serves as the cornerstone of the arboretum, 175 Governor Hogg Pkwy.

Organizers are hoping for a solid turnout. It has been a challenging year – volunteers maintained the grounds throughout the pandemic, but the social distancing safety precautions have hampered fundraising efforts.

“We could really use the community’s support,” said Garden Manager Lin Grado. “We are offering a wide selection of wonderful plants that people will enjoy adding to their landscaping.”

The occasion kicks off with a members-only presale opportunity planned for 4-6 p.m. Oct. 16, followed by the actual sale, set for 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. the following day.

“Stock will be replenished for the Saturday sale,” Grado said. “The pre-sale is a perk for members, as a thank you for helping support the arboretum.”

Annual memberships start at $25, and people can join Friday evening, then shop at the pre-sale. Members also receive a discount on their plant purchases.

Proceeds from the event support the care and upkeep of the arboretum, including the recent installation of perimeter metal fencing to protect the grounds from destructive feral hogs.

Shoppers are asked to wear face coverings and observe social distances. Hand sanitizer will be available.

Shoppers this year can select from a diverse collection of specimens to enjoy, from seasonal favorites such as pansies and snapdragons to ornamental kale and cabbages.

An array of shrubs, grasses, vines and trees is also available, including colorful azaleas and camelias and the beloved red maples.

“Plant stock is starting to arrive from the growers, and we feel certain our shoppers will be impressed with the quality and selections,” said Deanna Caldwell, president of Friends of the Arboretum, which oversees the grounds.

The annual fall plant sale is only one of many projects offered throughout the year at the arboretum, a 23-acre garden venue that also features a walking trail, theme gardens, tribute plantings and new Monarch way station.
