Arboretum holding fall plant sale

Celebrate autumn this month with a visit to the fall plant sale, hosted by the Wood County Arboretum and Botanical Gardens.

The popular fundraising event is set for 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11 on the grounds of the arboretum, 175 Governor Hogg Pkwy. In Quitman.

The event promises to showcase an eye-popping array of landscaping favorites and new selections, said Lin Grado, garden manager.

“Fall is for planting,” she said. “We are going to have some unusual plants this year, such as variegated banana, Baja fairy duster and new-to-the-sale bulbs, as well as a few Texas native plants that we feature in the gardens. It will be a great sale this year. We hope people will come out and shop.”

Buying opportunities kick off with a members-only presale planned for 4-6 p.m. Friday, followed by the actual sale the following day.

Stock will be replenished ahead of the Saturday sale, Grado said, noting the presale is intended as a gesture of appreciation to members for supporting the arboretum.

Annual memberships start at $25 and include discounts on plant purchases. Visitors can join via the arboretum’s website, www.woodcountyarbo.org, in advance of the sale, or on Friday evening to take advantage of pre-sale buying opportunities.

Also on the website is a list of plants included in the sale.

Proceeds support the care and upkeep of the arboretum, said Deanna Caldwell, president of Friends of the Arboretum.

“We hope people will come out, shop and enjoy their time at the arboretum,” she said. “It’s a wonderful time of the year and we appreciate the community support.”

The annual fall plant sale is one of many projects offered throughout the year at the arboretum, a 23-acre garden venue that also features a walking trail, theme gardens, tribute plantings and Monarch way station.
