Auction caps off county junior livestock show
Kori Hammond’s grand champion steer from Quitman FFA led off the auction Friday evening in Quitman to put the finishing touches on the 2023 Wood County Junior Livestock Show.
The auction was dedicated to the late Burke Bullock of Winnsboro who was killed in a traffic crash in February. The longtime ag teacher was called a mentor to many of the teachers who have kept alive the traditions of the stock show and an innovator of many of the contests in the show.
Hammonds was awarded $7,000 for the winning bid from Sigma AgriScience.
The grand champion commercial heifer of Kenley Carr of Quitman FFA followed with a $6,000 bid from Toliver Ford, and the bidding continued through the 18 grand and reserve champions crowned during the preceding three days in Quitman’s new ag facility.
In all, the grand and reserve animals and ag mechanics projects drew bids totaling $72,350.
Sigma stepped in again as the grand champion dairy heifer of Emma Allen of Winnsboro FFA drew $4,000.
Mattison Smith of Quitman FFA received $4,000 from Potts Feed and Catocon Inc. for her grand champion hog.
The grand champion goat of Blaine Crow of the Hawkins FFA drew $3,600 from Nathan and Catherine Crow.
Brooke Burson from Winnsboro FFA got a winning bid of $2,000 from Mineola Packing for her grand champion lamb.
Buddy and Loretta Huff ran the bids up to $5,600 for the grand champion broilers of Kennedi Elmore of Quitman FFA.
Winning bid for the grand champion rabbits of Kyleigh Swanner of Winnsboro FFA was $2,000 from Mineola Community Bank.
And rounding out the grand champions was Hunter Ballard of the Mineola FFA with his ag mechanics project, a round hay baler, for $2,300 to Yellowjacket Welding.
Bidding remained solid as the reserve champions entered the ring, led by the steer of Brayley Carr of Quitman FFA, which drew a $7,100 bid from Legacy Ag Credit.
Lennon Construction picked up the reserve champion commercial heifer with a $6,000 bid to Hannah Shackelford of the Alba-Golden FFA.
Top bid for the auction went to reserve champion dairy heifer shown by Shanda Davis of the Winnsboro FFA, $8,000 by Sigma AgriScience.
City National Bank topped bidders for the reserve champion hog of Luke Wernecke of Mineola FFA at $3,600.
Red Dome Smokehouse took the bid for the reserve champion goat of Sarah Crow of Hawkins FFA for $2,100.
Rylee Dunn of Hawkins FFA received $2,750 for her reserve champion lamb from the Wood County Farm Bureau.
Peoples Telephone took the bid for the reserve champion poultry at $2,700, going to Averi Ryan of Quitman FFA.
The reserve champion rabbits also went to Wood County Farm Bureau for $1,600 to Aliana Roberts of the Mineola FFA.
And to round out the champions, Gabby Chaney of the Quitman FFA and her indoor dog kennel earned $2,000 from Kearns Heating and Air for the reserve champion ag mechanics project.
In all, 110 lots were sold.
