Bad week

Posted 10/3/18

This was not a good week for Wood County football teams. Of the five teams in the county, only Hawkins came away with a win in their 22-7 win over Como-Pickton raising their season total to 2-3. Coach Scott Evans, his staff and the Hawks are to be congratulated on their efforts and the big win.

This was not a good week for Wood County football teams. Of the five teams in the county, only Hawkins came away with a win in their 22-7 win over Como-Pickton raising their season total to 2-3. Coach Scott Evans, his staff and the Hawks are to be congratulated on their efforts and the big win.

Mineola and Winnsboro each found out why West Rusk and Gladewater are each ranked in the Class 3A Top Ten. Mineola fell behind, but showed a lot of character and talent as they fought back against the number seven team in the state before finally falling 42-21 at West Rusk. Winnsboro also played tough in spots, but just could not overcome Gladewater’s athleticism in their 39-6 loss to the Bears.

Quitman found out the new district is going to be tough taking it on the chin at Arp 46-6. The Bulldogs did not have any trouble moving the pigskin, but penalties and a costly turnover doomed Quitman. Coach Bryan Oakes, his staff and the Bulldogs must prepare for a Grand Saline team which fell to Troup 48-20. It’s homecoming week in Quitman so the Bulldogs must get focused and stay that way amid all of the activities.

Grand Saline is sitting at 2-1 for the year. In fact Troup, Harmony, Winona and Arp were winners in the opening round of district 10-3A DII while Quitman, Grand Saline, Alba-Golden and Frankston lost their district outings.

Although Alba-Golden fell to the high-flying Harmony Eagles, the Panthers showed resilience and a toughness on the road which will pay for them later on down the road in the 35-7 loss. Down 28-0 at the half, the Panthers played toe to toe with the Eagles in the second half holding the potent Harmony offense to just one score. The Panthers are determined to make the playoffs and this week they have a Homecoming game hosting Winona. This could be one of those games which could spell a difference at the end of the season.

Mineola has this weekend off and then five consecutive weeks of district play. After the bye week, the ‘Jackets will host Gladewater in a big showdown Oct. 12. Winnsboro goes to White Oak Friday. Hawkins also has a bye this week and begin district play at home Oct. 12 against undefeated Union Grove (5-0).

My college teams were up and down. The UNT Eagles lost their first game when Louisiana Tech blocked a field goal as time ran out, but SMU racked up a big win over Houston Baptist. A&M Commerce rolled over Lock Haven 68-6 and even the Jerry Jones boys won a game.

I don’t watch much NFL, not in protest, just not interested. Give me a good college game anytime, anywhere.

Volleyball begins round two in District 12-3A play this week. Edgewood remains the team to beat with a perfect district slate while Quitman is a step behind with only a district loss to Edgewood. Coach Ashlee Lingo’s young Lady Bulldog squad continues to gain valuable experience and hope to make the playoffs with a winning streak. Coach TaShara Everett has her Lady Panthers at 3-3 in district and A-G is working hard to reach the playoffs and have success once they get there. Mineola’s very young Yellowjackets continue to get better with each outing and the young ladies in orange plan on upsetting some of those teams ahead of them in the standings.

The District 12-3A Cross Country meet is set for this Saturday morning at Mineola Nature Preserve. Stay tuned to our Facebook page in case any of those CC plans are changed.
