Baseball, softball squads head into district play

Alba-Golden, Mineola and Quitman baseball and softball teams took advantage of the tournament season this past weekend as they prepare for district openers. The Alba-Golden Lady Panthers softball team was the only idle team this weekend, although they have recorded a 9-0 season start. They started district play at 5 p.m. Tuesday March 5 at Rains.

Baseball, softball squads head into district play

Alba-Golden, Mineola and Quitman baseball and softball teams took advantage of the tournament season this past weekend as they prepare for district openers. The Alba-Golden Lady Panthers softball team was the only idle team this weekend, although they have recorded a 9-0 season start. They started district play at 5 p.m. Tuesday March 5 at Rains.

The Panthers baseball team played five games in tournament action in Tyler. They notched wins against John Tyler High School and Cumberland Academy. The Panthers fell to Gladewater, Brownsboro and Lone Oak. Coach David Webster’s team will open district play Thursday March 14 in an afternoon home game against Grand Saline. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

The Lady Jackets softball team participated in the McKinney Tourney, finishing with one win, two losses and a tie. The Lady Jackets shut out Argyle by a score of 6-0, tied Midland, and suffered close losses to Mount Pleasant and Allen. Mineola’s softball opener was scheduled for Tuesday evening, March 5 at Edgewood.

The Yellowjackets saw action in the Malakoff Tourney. Mineola defeated Rice Consolidated but fell to Garrison, Malakoff and Mabank. The Yellowjackets will open their 2019 campaign at home on Tuesday evening, March 12 against Rains.

Chris Veach’s Lady Bulldogs played six games at the Longview Two Step Tourney, compiling a 2-4 record. Quitman bettered Tatum and Paul Pewitt High School while enduring losses to New Diana, Joaquin, New Boston and Center. Quitman will travel to Alba-Golden on Friday, March 8 in their district opener. Game time is 5 p.m.

The Bulldog baseball team competed in the Union Grove Tourney. They prevailed in exciting wins over Hawkins and Ore City, by scores of 9-7 and 8-7, respectively, before falling to Sabine. The Bulldogs commence district play at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 12 at Grand Saline.
