MISD board hears about enrollment
The Mineola School Board heard that district enrollment still remains over 1,620 students during the regular monthly meeting last Monday.
Also in last Monday’s meeting, the school board announced the hiring of Luke Blackwell as the new athletic director. (See separate story on front page.)
Superintendent Kim Tunnell reported the enrollment hasn’t followed the pattern of dropping from the fall during the spring. “Our attendance is back up to over 95 percent.” She said the district had been close to having to close school due to the high number of absences during January and February and staff was monitoring daily attendance.
The superintendent report was over the PreK and Head Start enrollment process for this spring. “We currently have three Head Start classrooms, one 3-year-old and 2-four-year old rooms. We currently have a 1/2 day PreK program for 20 students who qualify, but will be moving that 4 year old program to full day beginning in August 2017 to provide additional learning opportunities and support families who are unable to participate due to the inability to pick their child up at noon,” Tunnell said.
The district has 80 slots between all four of the Early Childhood Classrooms.” Tunnell also said in the meeting that staff talked about the online registration process for all new students.
