The Quitman Bulldogs fell victim to another slow start, falling behind 15-3 in the first quarter before finally losing at Winnsboro 64-55. The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 10-10 on the season and 3-7 in District 13-3A. Winnsboro maintains a third-place standing and will be a playoff team.

The Bulldogs put together a run in the final quarter, outscoring the Red Raiders 24-12, but it was not enough. The young Bulldog team has matured through the season, and with just one senior, the future looks extremely positive for this group. The Bulldogs were relentless in their hustle and determination, but those efforts fell short.

Winnsboro showed great pressure defense and a lot of speed which helped the Raider defenders in the early part of the contest. When they finally got untracked, the Bulldogs had nine players who scored in a well-balanced effort.

The Raiders built on their strong first quarter with 26 second-quarter points to Quitman’s 16 to take a commanding 41-19 lead at the half. Quitman’s Levi Thompson and Ford Tannebaum hit three pointers in the second quarter, but the Raiders had their biggest lead of the game 53-29 until Thompson hit a pair of free throws at the end of the quarter to make it 51-31 going into the final quarter.

Quitman’s Jack Tannebaum hit a triple to start the Bulldog effort in the fourth period, cutting the Raider advantage to 52-34. Noah Emmons hit a Quitman bucket on a put back making it 55-38. The Bulldogs made a 10-0 run midway through the quarter to cut into the Winnsboro lead.

Aiden Corrior hit a shot and was fouled. He made the free throw and the lead was cut to 64-53. Thomas Sebedra made Quitman’s final points with a lay-up making it a 64-55 score, but time ran out on the Bulldogs in their comeback efforts.

For the game Corrior had 13 points, Thompson 12, Brady Floyd eight, Sebedra seven, Jack Tannebaum five, Ford Tannebaum four, and Landon Richey, Emmons and Justin Matthews two each.

After a game at Mt. Vernon Tuesday, Quitman will close out their schedule Friday at Delbert Ballard Gym against district co-leader Mineola.
