The Quitman Bulldogs raised their record to 2-1, defeating Class 4A Quinlan Ford 56-39 on Tuesday Nov. 22. The Bulldogs will be playing this weekend at the White Oak Tournament.

The game got off to a slow start with the Panthers scoring first to lead until the Bulldog’s Levi Thompson planted a three-point shot with 3:28 to go in the first stanza.  The initial quarter ended with Quinlan holding a 10-7 advantage.

The defenses continued to shine in the second quarter. On offense Quitman’s Thomas Sebedra gave the Bulldogs their first lead with a drive down the lane to make it 15-14.

Quinlan got a quick bucket to go back in the lead, but Thompson came back with a bucket when he got his own rebound and scored on the follow-up. Quitman never fell behind again.

Quinlan tied the game at 19-19, but the Bulldog’s Hunter Jacobs hit a long triple giving Quitman a 22-19 lead at the half.

In the second half the Bulldog offense came alive and the defense caused numerous Panther turnovers enabling a 34-19 surge leading to the 56-39 victory.

In the third quarter Thompson hit a pair of treys and Jacobs added another, giving Quitman a 37-28 edge going into the final quarter. Carter Smith also made a beautiful move hitting the bucket to give the Bulldogs their last score of the quarter.

Quitman’s Payton Sapp came off the bench to ignite an early Quitman run with a successful triple followed by a running lay-up to raise the Bulldog lead to 40-28, and Quinlan was not able to answer. Thompson and Jacobs each added final quarter triples in the victory.

Quitman got excellent play form their big guys in the lane. Landon Richey, Ethan Presley and Garin Kisinger controlled the boards. Quinlan was not able to score down low due to the constant defensive pressure of the Quitman post players. Brady Floyd also had a great game causing Quinlan to hurry passes and mistakes with his defensive effort.

In the final two minutes Quitman’s Brock Koch and Brandon Hayes ignited the fans and their teammates by hitting three point shots leading to the 56-39 win. Thompson led Quitman scoring with 20 points.

The Bulldogs return to the home court Dec. 13 to play another Class 4A foe, Van. The Bulldog district season begins Jan. 3 at home against Harmony.
