Mt. Vernon 66, Quitman 44

The Mt. Vernon Tigers jumped to an early lead and held on to down the Quitman Bulldogs in district 13-3A action at Delbert Ballard Gym Friday night.

The Tigers went up early 4-0 as Quitman did not score in the first two minutes until Aiden Corrior hit a jump shot to make it 4-2. The Tigers then scored 10 points to take a 14-2 lead. Levi Thompson ended the Tiger run with 2:08 left in the quarter making it 14-4. Corrior cut the lead to 14-6, but the Tigers hit a triple and a free throw leading to a 17-6 edge. Quitman’s Thompson hit another bucket and the quarter ended with each team scoring once more leaving the score 19-8 after one period.

In the second quarter, Thomas Sabedra’s drive through the lane was successful cutting the Mt. Vernon lead to 21-11. The Tiger’s pressure defense caused the Bulldogs some problems with turnovers leading to easy Mt. Vernon buckets. With Mt. Vernon leading 37-17, the Bulldog’s Landon Richey muscled his way through a crowd of defenders to hit a basket as time ran out ending with a halftime score of 37-19 in favor of the Tigers.

The Bulldogs fought hard, but the Tigers just kept coming after them on defense. The Bulldogs fell behind 49-24 late in the third quarter. Garin Kisinger hit a couple of buckets, and a Brady Floyd jump shot and Sebedra free throw made it 53-30 going into the final eight minutes.

The Bulldogs usual three-point success was not in play this time, as they made only one bucket from outside the arc by Ford Tannebaum in the final quarter. The Bulldogs hurt themselves making just 10-27 at the free throw line.

The Bulldogs continued to press into the final quarter, but Mt. Vernon held on to get the 66-46 win. Thompson led the Bulldogs with 13 points for the game.

Winnsboro 78, Quitman 54

The Bulldogs faced off against Winnsboro earlier in the week on Tuesday. The Red Raiders’ constant pressure defense and transition offense utilizing the fast break led to the 78-54 win over Quitman.

The Bulldogs got off to a fast start taking a 4-0 lead on buckets by Aiden Corrior and Brady Floyd. But the Raiders went on a 12-0 run taking a 12-4 edge before another Corrior jump shot made in 12-6. A Garin Kisinger free throw made it a 15-7 game after one quarter.

Landon Richey made the first six points of the second quarter for the Bulldogs and Corrior added seven, but the hot-handed Raiders scored 22 second quarter points and took a 37-23 lead at intermission.

Midway through the third quarter, the Bulldogs went cold and Winnsboro took advantage with a 17 point run to go up 62-32 before Ford Tannebaum hit a free throw for Quitman. The Raiders led 66-36 when Ford Tannebaum hit a shot at the buzzer making it a 66-38 game going into the final quarter.

The Bulldogs continue to put up a great effort but it was too little, too late to overcome the aggressive play of Winnsboro. Ford Tannebaum hit for eight fourth quarter points as Quitman fought back, but Winnsboro held on for the win.

Corrior led Quitman with 17 points while Ford Tannebaum added 10, Floyd eight and Richey six.

After a Tuesday game at Mineola, the Bulldogs host Harmony Friday.
