After winning their first three games in the annual Quitman Tournament on Thursday and Friday, the Quitman Bulldogs fell twice on Saturday. The Bulldogs lost in the tournament semi-finals to Rivercrest and fell to a very athletic Hooks team 59-50 in the battle for third place.

The Bulldogs started on target early against Hooks with Trey Berry, Justin Pruden and Jace Reid each hit a bucket to give Quitman a 6-2 advantage. Berry and Ben Burroughs hit back to back triples to give Quitman a 12-6 lead with 3:30 left in the quarter. Berry added a bucket at the end of the first period for the Bulldogs lead 14-11 going into the second quarter.

Pruden and Reid provided offensive spark and Riley Flanagan worked hard on the boards in the second quarter. Reid had a pair of three-point shots and free throw for seven points in the quarter while Pruden dominated under the boards and put in six points. Flanagan hit a bucket as time ran down in the first half to make the score 40-36 with Quitman leading.

The Hornet full court pressure caused a few problems for the Bulldogs and Hooks on a 15-7 run in the third quarter to take a 40-36 lead into the final frame.

Quitman fell behind 53-44 but a Pruden bucket with just under two minutes left made hit a 53-46 deficit. Hooks regained a nine point lead at the 1:34 mark and spent the remainder of the game in a stall. A late Burroughs bucket made it a 59-50 final tally.

Pruden poured in 20 points, most coming during rugged play in the lane while Reid added 14.

The Bulldogs are now 6-5 going into district action Tuesday night at home against Grand Saline.

Winnsboro, who beat Quitman earlier in the week 55-50, took the Quitman Tournament championship with a victory over Rivercrest. The Red Raiders are 11-4 on the season.
