Bulldogs get first test with three-way scrimmage

The Quitman Bulldogs got their first opportunity to hit someone on a team other than themselves in practice. A scrimmage is basically a practice to see where a team stands this early in preparation for the season.

The Bulldogs squared off against Quinlan Boles and Como-Pickton Friday at Bud Moody Field. The Bulldog defense took the field against the Boles offense in the first series. Boles had a good drive and scored on their first possession on a short run.

The Quitman offense came back on a drive scoring on a 60-yard pass completion from Kamron Crockett to tight end Hayden Batchelder. Batchelder played center last year but  came back 40 pounds lighter and running a solid 4.9 40-yard sprint. On the score, he showed good hands making the catch and then outran a pair of defensive backs showing off his running ability.

“Boles is definitely going to be a playoff team, they were very good. We know what we need to work on and that is what scrimmages are about,” Head Coach Shane Webber said. “We need to do more work on both the offensive and defensive lines. We had four kids out with injuries who will each make a contribution to the team when they are healthy. Como-Pickton is always solid on defense so we did get a lot of work in against two quality opponents.”

The Bulldogs and Wood County rival Alba-Golden will scrimmage Thursday at 6 p.m. JV and varsity teams will be in action.
