The Quitman Bulldogs got a measure of revenge against Winnsboro last Tuesday. The Bulldogs suffered a heartbreaking 62-60 loss at Winnsboro in the first round of district play but rebounded with a thrilling 68-67 win over the Raiders to keep their playoff hopes intact.

Bulldogs nip Red Raiders in key district game

The Quitman Bulldogs got a measure of revenge against Winnsboro last Tuesday. The Bulldogs suffered a heartbreaking 62-60 loss at Winnsboro in the first round of district play but rebounded with a thrilling 68-67 win over the Raiders to keep their playoff hopes intact.

The teams traded buckets throughout the first quarter. A three-point shot by Winnsboro’s Hayden Deaton put the Raiders up 14-11 with 2:57 left in the opening quarter. Quitman came back on a bucket from Hunter Jacobs making it 14-13. Winnsboro led 19-15 after one quarter. 

The Bulldogs kept things close in the second quarter. Ethan Presley scored for Quitman to give the Bulldogs a 22-21 lead. Brady Floyd consistently drove to the basket and got fouled. He made 5-6 free throws in the quarter as the first half ended with the Raiders clinging to a 31-29 lead.

The Bulldogs broke things open in the third quarter with 18 points to just six for Winnsboro giving Quitman a 47-37 lead going into the final quarter. A Levi Thompson triple with 24 seconds left in the quarter gave the Bulldogs the 10-point cushion going into the final eight minutes. In the quarter Thompson scored 10 points and Jacobs added five with Ford Tannebaum adding a steal and score.

In the fourth quarter, Winnsboro clawed its way back into the game led by Deaton, Finney and Canaan Swanner. In the final four minutes, the teams traded buckets. Quitman hit three consecutive triples with Ford Tannebaum scoring two and Thompson adding another to take a 58-48 lead. 

Winnsboro would not go away as the Raiders fought back to cut the score to 58-54 on a basket by Deaton. The Bulldogs were able to stay a step ahead of the Raiders by free throws, four each from Floyd and Thompson. Floyd hit on 9-10 free throws in the contest. 

Quitman had taken a 62-57 lead with only 1:29 remaining on a pair of Floyd charity tosses. Thompson added two more free throws with 46 seconds to go putting Quitman up 64-59. A bucket by Raider Crayton Klika cut the Quitman lead to 64-61. Again, Floyd hit free throws and it was 66-61.

Winnsboro’s Swanner hit three-pointer with eight seconds to go making the score 66-64. Thompson calmly stepped to the line with five seconds left to make it a 68-64 with Quitman leading. Winnsboro quickly got the ball up court where Swanner hit another three to make it a 68-67 Quitman lead as time expired. 

Thompson led Quitman with 30 points followed by a solid outing from Ford Tannebaum with 15 points with Jacobs and Floyd with nine points each for Quitman.
