After an opening game loss to Wills Point the Quitman Bulldogs varsity boys basketball team came back to take the consolation championship at the Leonard Holiday Tournament.

The Bulldogs took down Class 4A Gilmer 66-53 with a strong second half performance.

The Bulldogs were down 27-25 but took control in the second half, outscoring the Buckeyes 41-26 to earn the victory.

Quitman’s Landon Richey continues to show more dominance on the boards in each game. Richey scored 12 points, going a perfect 6-6 from the field, and his presence in the lane was intimidating with three blocked shots.

Levi Thompson connected on 4-8 from beyond the arc on his way to a game-high 24 points. He also had nine rebounds. Hunter Jacobs continues his steady play on both ends of the court as he scored 16 points. Brady Floyd turned in another of his strong games scoring nine points and muscling his way to 12 rebounds. Floyd also added three assists and four steals.

The Bulldogs made it to the consolation finals with a 52-38 win over Bonham. Thompson led the scoring with 21 points. Jacobs added eight points including a pair from beyond the arc. Floyd had seven points and eight rebounds. Richey had two points and he was instrumental on defense with eight rebounds, a steal and a block. Thomas Sabedra had five points and led the team with four assists.

A cold shooting second half cost the Bulldogs in their 60-41 opening game loss. Floyd led the scoring with 12 points and nine rebounds. Jacobs added 11 points while Ethan Presely stepped up on the boards with 12 rebounds and four points.

After opening district at home against Harmony Tuesday, the Bulldogs travel to Winona Friday. The 13-3A race will be an interesting one with Mt. Pleasant Chapel Hill highly-ranked this season and a Mineola team that was ranked in the Top 20 in pre-season polls.
