Bulldogs wrap up final scrimmage
The Quitman Bulldogs finished pre-season workouts with a three-way scrimmage last Thursday night at Paris Chisum. The Bulldogs took on Chisum and Como-Pickton.
Quitman scored on a run by Trey Berry and had another score by Dylan Coe nullified by a penalty.
In the controlled portion of the scrimmage Quitman ran 24 offensive plays and 12 defensive plays. The Bulldog defense did not give up any points throughout the evening and looked in good form.
Coach Bryan Oakes was pleased with the Bulldog’s continued improvement. “In the live quarter format we ran one series of offense and two series of defense. We were able to score in the red zone and gave up no touchdowns. We finished the last drive defensively with a fourth down stop from a first and goal from the five yard line situation agaisnt Chisum,” Oakes said. “Red zone scoring and defensive stops have been a huge point of emphasis this offseason and the ability to accomplish both going into preseason play is huge.”
Oakes said seniors River Chaney, Berry and Coe each looked ready to play. “Chaney ran the ball extremely well and also has stepped up defensively in a huge way. Berry did good on offense where he scored the only TD and made some huge tackles from the free safety position,” Oakes noted.
“Coe was physical defensively and had several catches, one of which was for a TD that they ruled incomplete (questionable) when he hit the ground and the ball came out.”
Oakes said the Bulldog defense is playing well for this early in the season. “The defense is playing as a unit and understanding their role, best I have seen in three years,” Oakes added. “I thought the fact that both teams ran reverses, throwbacks and other things – plays that are to confuse an undisciplined kid– with no avail was a great testament to the kids and where they are.”
Quitman kicks off the season at home against Cumby. The Bulldogs broke a 43 game losing streak last year with a 30-6 win over the Trojans. Cumby brings a team picked to make the playoff hunt this year after going 5-6 last season.
