Services for Calvin Gunter, 80, were Saturday, May 18 at Southside Church of Christ in Mineola.

Mr. Gunter died May 11, 2019.

Mr. Gunter was born Aug. 28, 1938, in Quitman to the late Benny and Willie Opal Gunter. At an early age, the family moved to Mineola and settled on Krause Street. He attended elementary through high school at Addie E. McFarland.

He was employed at Benham & Company until he retired in 1996.

He dedicated his life to Christ at an early age at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church. He later joined Southside Church of Christ in 1972. Being active in the church was the highlight of his life. There was never a time Brother Gunter would not hesitate to transport church members back and forth to Southside Church of Christ. Brother Calvin served the Lord well, and he will be greatly missed. He was a good neighbor, and many counted him as a friend.

He served faithfully as a Sunday school teacher, a leading brother, and a trustee. He would visit the sick and shut-ins, and willingly served in whatever capacity he was needed. Everyone knew him as a kind and caring person. He would share his wisdom with the young as well as the old. He was grounded in God’s word and could quote a scripture for any occasion. Those who knew him well would tell you that Brother Calvin enjoyed football and playing dominoes. A great big smile would cross his face whenever he got an opportunity to beat his three siblings, Elvin, Robert and James, at dominoes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sisters, Beatrice Gunter and Marie Perry.

Survivors include his brothers, James of Garland, Elvin of Mineola, and Robert of Fort Worth; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
