Canton gets past Mineola in four games as Lady Jackets prepare for district play

Mineola’s Lady Jackets fell behind early against the Lady Eagles volleyball squad Friday afternoon in Canton and were unable to close the gap, losing the first game 25-11. It seemed the speed and skill of the green Eagles’ attack would overwhelm the ladies in orange.

“We started out slow tonight, but we picked it up,” Coach TaShara Everett said of her team, and the energy was evident in the second game. No server could dominate possession, and neither team could muster more than a two-point lead until the very last when Mineola took the game 25-22.

Everett knows the Lady Jackets “have got to clean up some things on defense to be ready for district play,” but there are signs showing of a team ready to compete at a higher level. To get them there in the second set, the coach “told them they need to play to their potential … because we’re running out of games before district play.”

The third game opened similarly to the first, with Canton clawing out an early lead, but were reeled back in many times, with the rest of the match within grasp for Mineola.

Even though they were bested 25-20 and 25-19 in the third and fourth games respectively, the Lady Jackets continued to look promising as they prepare for district play, which begins Friday, Sept. 17 when Mineola hosts the Alba-Golden Lady Panthers.
