Panthers stay unbeaten with 15-13 road victory
The Alba-Golden Panthers defeated the Whitewright Tigers 15-13 to improve to 4-0 on the season.
It was a defensive battle from the opening kickoff as the two teams looked to get into an offensive rhythm. Dalton Wright got the Panthers on the scoreboard first in the second quarter on a 13 yard touchdown run behind the left side of the offensive line and he added the point after to put A-G up 7-0 going into halftime.
Kyle Morrow intercepted two passes in the game, one in each half to lead the Panthers. Hunter Riley returned a kickoff for a 71-yard touchdown of right after Whitewright closed the margin to make the score 7-6.
Wright added the two point conversion once again around the left side to extend the Panther lead to 15-6. Whitewright scored a late TD to close the gap, but the Panthers ran out the clock with some of their best blocking of the night.
The Panther leading rusher was Wright who had 24 carries, 79 yards and a touchdown while Marco Aquilera added 36 yards with several key first down runs as A-G ran out the clock with three first downs to end the game. Brady Rolen was 4-6 passing for 24 yards with three of his passes going to wide receiver Morrow.
Defensively the Panthers were led by Aquilera, Morrow, Logan Culp, James Woodrum, Evan Galyean, Freddie Reeves and Riley.
Whitewright outgained the Panthers 274 to 161 but Alba Golden Head Football Coach Ron Callahan said, "We just kept battling and playing for four complete quarters. We found a way to win when we were not hitting on all cylinders on offense. Special teams came up with big plays for us with the score and we covered all our kicks really well. Dalton Wright took over the punting duties and averaged 31 yards a kick. Once again, our defense stepped up and contained Whitewright's big play makers."
Next up the Panthers will host Big Sandy for Homecoming Friday at 7:30 p.m.
