Church seeks demolition permit
Demolition of the former Kitchens home at 303 N. Johnson St. in Mineola will again be considered by the city’s Landmark Commission Thursday.
The First Baptist Church of Mineola owns the property and has applied for a demolition permit.
The church’s first attempt to get the 1930s-era home torn down was delayed when the Landmark Commission’s vote was voided for two reasons – lack of five approving votes and incorrect style of application.
The Mineola City Council approved changes to the zoning ordinance section governing the historic downtown district on Monday.
Most notable were provisions that the commission need not have five positive votes to approve a permit, only a simple majority of members present.
The second involves enforcement of building maintenance. The change moves that responsibility from the commission to the city’s code enforcement official.
Both matters drew much debate from the council prior to approval.
The council did make one change to the proposal and reinstated the provision for appealing a commission decision to the council, which had been removed in the suggested changes by the city attorney.
The commission meets at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 15 at Mineola City Hall and has several requests to address.
The council held a public hearing on the proposed 2022-23 city budget Monday which drew no comment. It will be up for adoption Monday, Sept. 19 at 5:30 p.m.
