Alba-Golden Lady Panthers hold 6-2 district record

The week of March 27-31 is one that Alba-Golden softball coach Tiffani Mason will not soon forget. It was one of those weeks that started off great and just got better.

On Monday, March 27, Mason’s Lady Panthers handed the Lady Yellowjackets their first defeat of the 2017 District 12-3A campaign by a score of 4-2. Then on Tuesday, March 28, her Lady Panthers found themselves on the road again against another district power as they ventured to Edgewood. And, what a game that was.

After the end of the seven innings of regulation play the score was just like it was when the game started, 0-0. But it wasn’t to stay that way long.

In the top of the eighth inning Gracie Pendergrass, who had two hits in the game, unleashed a solo home run and her teammates made it hold up in the bottom half of the frame to send the Lady Panthers back to Alba-Golden with a 1-0 victory and a 5-2 district record.

Bralee Littlejohn worked the first five innings in the pitcher’s circle for the Lady Panthers, recording nine strikeouts. Morgan Curtis took over pitching duties for the final three innings and logged in four more strike-outs.

On Friday, it was home game time for Alba-Golden, the Lady Panthers hosting Grand Saline and coasting to an 11-1 win that elevated their district record to 6-2.

Alba-Golden put four runs on the board in each of the first two innings, added two more in the fourth and the final marker in the sixth, ending the game via the 10-run mercy rule. Grand Saline’s only run came in the fifth.

Curtis worked the whole game in the pitcher’s circle, recording six strike-outs.

At the plate, Lindsey Roberts had four hits and Briana Weissert had three to lead the Lady Panther barrage.

Alba-Golden was scheduled to visit Kemp at 6 p.m. on Tuesday of this week and then host Quitman on Friday, leaving them only a trip to Eustace on April 14 and a home game with Mineola on April 18 to close out the regular season.
