Civic Center launches annual funding campaign

Posted

As with many organizations, the Mineola Civic Center has been impacted by the fall out from the coronavirus pandemic.

Civic center operating revenue has decreased significantly this year because of COVID-19 related cancellation of events and recreational vehicle reservations.

The center saw annual events such as the chamber of commerce banquet canceled and community groups such as Kiwanis Club halt its meetings for several months.

So the non-profit center’s board determined that an annual fund campaign could help meet the shortfall.

“For the first time in its history, the civic center asks the community to support its work with a gift to the Mineola Civic Center Annual Fund,” said board President Pam Thurman. “Gifts of every amount will help the center fulfill its mission and serve the Mineola, Wood County and greater East Texas area. All donors to the annual fund will be recognized as Friends of the Mineola Civic Center.”

The center took steps to reduce expenses as well as seek creative ways to continue to support the community, such as free wifi, serving as a location for COVID-19 testing and working to keep outdoor recreation areas open.

Gifts to the annual fund can be mailed to the Civic Center at P.O. Box 384, Mineola, Texas 75773 or dropped off at the office in Meredith Hall. Credit card donations may be made at the office in Meredith Hall.

The Mineola Civic Center was organized and incorporated in 1972 to provide a meeting place for the engagement of charitable, cultural, civic and educational activities. It opened in 1977. Unlike most such centers, the Mineola Civic Center is not owned by the city or county and has never been supported by state, county or city tax dollars. Instead, the early visionary leaders of the center founded the organization on the power of philanthropy. This spirit of giving was exemplified by Harrison Wilbert Meredith, a native of Kentucky who moved to Mineola in 1907. From wealth built on oil investments and banking interests, Meredith formed the Meredith Foundation. The Meredith Foundation gives a generous gift to the civic center each year to support a portion of its operations.
