Commissioners set lower tax rate
At a special session of the Wood County commissioners last week, the property tax rate was adopted for the upcoming year which enables them to meet the new budget adopted.
A public hearing was held Sept. 13 at 8:30 a.m. with no one in attendance to speak or seek information. County Judge Lucy Hebron and commissioners Jerry Gaskill, Mike Simmons and Russell Acker were in attendance. Commissioner Virgil Holland was absent.
The maintenance and operations tax rate is $0.3625 while road and bridge maintenance and operations was set at $0.1700 to make the rate a total of $0.5325. Last year the tax rate was $0.5525, two cents higher than this year.
Due to Wood County appraisals being higher this year, property owners will be paying more this year. The new rate will cover the cost of the 2022 budget. The new budget will be set at $28,984,862 compared with last year’s $26,695,211.
The property tax represents a 1.84% increase over last year.
