Panthers knock off Eustace but fall to Kemp

The Alba-Golden Panthers opened the second half of the District 12-3A basketball campaign at home last Tuesday evening by sliding past the Eustace Bulldogs, 58-48. This was a big victory for the Panthers as it left them very much in the chase for a spot in the playoffs and even provided them with a glimmer of hope for figuring in the district championship race.

The Panthers finished the first half of the district campaign last Friday by knocking Mineola from the ranks of the undefeated in district play with a 40-39 overtime victory over the Yellowjackets.

Eustace made Tuesday’s battle quite a contest for three quarters before the Panthers put a little air in the score in the final quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs 18-13 in the period.

The big gun for the Panthers in that final session was Logan Miller who hit one field goal and was perfect on 10 trips to the free throw line. Evan Galyean also made two trips to the charity line in the final quarter and made both shots. In fact, the free throw line was a very good friend to the Panthers against Eustace as they made 14 trips to the foul shot stripe and made all 14 of those attempts.

Meanwhile, Alba-Golden was charged with only eight fouls in the game and the Bulldogs could make just two of five free shots attempted.

While Miller was Alba-Golden’s leading scorer with 26 points, he had seven teammates crack the scoring column, giving the Panthers lots of different scoring power looks during the contest. Galyean and Mike Hartin tied for second place Panther scoring honors with eight points each.

After the Eustace contest, the Panthers had six games left on the conference schedule, being slated to travel to Kemp on Friday night, host Quitman on Tuesday, and then Surry Rosser on February 3.

“Our kids did a really good job tonight,” Panther Coach Jeff Mason said after the game. “This puts us in a good position to contend for a playoff spot now,” he added.

Alba-Golden traveled to face Kemp on Friday but lost to the Yellowjackets 59-46.

The Panthers (16-10, 5-4) hosted the Quitman Bulldogs (13-13, 4-5) Tuesday, after Monitor press time, and travel to Scurry-Rosser Friday.
