Bulldogs stay in playoff race

Just when you think it’s over, here come the never say die Quitman Bulldogs. After a tough 4-2 home loss to Winnsboro, the Bulldogs could have called it in for the season facing state-ranked Edgewood on Friday. A gutsy pitching performance by Jacob Davis kept Edgewood at bay, good base-running, and a timely hit gave Quitman a hard-earned 5-4 win.

The Bulldogs came from behind to tie the game 2-2 after seven innings. Edgewood came back to score two more in the top of the eighth inning to go up 4-2. In the bottom of the eighth, the Bulldogs loaded the bases and had two outs still when the Bulldogs drew a walk on a pitch that got by the catcher. Not only was one run forced in, but an alert A.J. Dunn got the go from Coach Hayland Hardy and he raced home to tie the game at 4-4. Jake Farmer strolled to the plate and on a 1-1 count, the talented shortstop belted a walk off single to right field scoring the winning run for the Bulldogs.

Davis only allowed five hits and one earned run in the game. Patterson had a single, a double and scored a run. Jacob Franzen, Cameron Peek, and Farmer each had singles.

The Bulldogs must win their final two games to stay in the playoff race. The Bulldogs stand 5-7 in district and 10-11 for the year. Edgewood and Grand Saline are now tied for first place with 9-3 district records. Winnsboro is in third at 7-5 with Mineola and Harmony tied at 6-6 and the Bulldogs next at 5-7. Winnsboro has to play Edgewood and Mineola has Grand Saline still to play.

“I could not be more proud of this group. Since losing our best hitter and the best catcher in the district in Pancho Ramirez, they have all stepped up,” Coach Hayland Hardy said. “Hunter Patterson has done a good job behind the plate and Jacob Franzen has been playing third for the first time this year. No matter what happens I am very proud of these young men.”

Ramirez was leading the team with a .440 batting average at the time of shoulder injury.

It is senior night Tuesday when the Bulldogs take on Harmony. Quitman finishes the regular season at Winona this Friday.
