County 4-H members earn top awards at annual banquet
The annual Wood County 4-H awards banquet was held Sept. 30 to recognize members, leaders and supporters for their work during the past year.
The Gold Star Award, which is the highest county-level award that can be achieved in 4-H, was presented to Dawson Chaney. Dawson is a nine-year member of Wood County 4-H, and his main projects have been horse, dog, dairy, and ag mechanics. He is the son of Johnny and Cheryl Chaney of Quitman.
The William Danforth “I Dare You” Leadership Award is presented to youth who show potential as leaders in the 4-H program. The 2019 recipients were Kierney Wallis and Ahneka Tullos.
Other 4-H members receiving awards for their project activities and involvement in different age divisions are as follows:
Bronze Star Award-Helena Bautista-Mathias, Alan De Gorostiza, Maddie Fetterolf and Blaine Moore
Rising Star Award-Megan Wallace
Outstanding Intermediate Award-Amanita Bautista-Mathias, Katelyn De Gorostiza, Daniel Kernes and Ashtin Tullos
Outstanding Junior Award-Jackson Wallis
4-H Rookie Award-Rhett Cox, Rowdy Mizer, Sage Mizer and Paizlee Swanner
4-H Leaders of the Year Award-Joe and Ketzie De Gorostiza
Friend of 4-H Award-Corey Hammond and Brant Lee
Wood County 4-H members who received a jacket sponsored by Bubba Brumit for earning a grand champion, reserve champion, and/or a showmanship award at the Wood County Junior Livestock Show were Mia Backer, Ahneka Tullos, Kori Hammond, Ariel Smajstrla, Reiny Luman and Rylee Dunn.
Wood County Senior 4-H members who are serving in leadership roles on the district and state levels are Jentri Jackson-State 4-H Council Secretary, Texas 4-H Livestock Ambassador; Jenna Haney-District 4-H Council Public Relations Officer, Texas Healthy Lifestyles Ambassador; and Kierney Wallis-Texas Healthy Lifestyles Ambassador.
Kaylin Baker was recognized as the recipient of the “Stephanie Norris Memorial 4-H Scholarship.” Kaylin is a recent graduate and was a 10-year member of 4-H and is now pursuing a degree in nursing.
As the parents of the 2016 4-H Gold Star recipient, Mr. and Mrs. Clint Perkins were given Curtis Perkins’ award portrait. Curtis is attending Paris Junior College and will transfer to Stephen F. Austin State University to complete his degree.
