Wood County recorded 68 new cases of COVID-19 for the week from July 20-27 and added one new death, bringing the total to six.

The county reached 261 total cases of the viral disease as of July 27, according to the Northeast Texas Public Health District. Those include 129 active cases, which is up from 93 last week.

Total recoveries reached 126, up by 31 from the prior week.

The death was recorded as a person in the Mineola ZIP code, adding to the five recorded in the Winnsboro ZIP code prior to June 10.

The state also began releasing numbers from nursing homes and assisted living centers this week.

The data is from July 13, which does not include a recent outbreak at Wood Memorial Nursing and Rehab Center in Mineola.

The data shows that Whispering Pines Nursing and Rehab in Winnsboro had eight employees contract the disease, including one still active as of the 13th. Some 24 residents tested positive, with three active, 15 recovered and six deaths.

As of July 13 Wood Memorial had two total employees test positive with one remaining active.

No cases were reported for Heritage House in Quitman, Mineola Heights or Trinity Nursing in Winnsboro.

Among assisted living centers, only Autumn Winds in Mineola had a report of a single employee as an active case, with no residents in any of the facilities testing positive.

As of Monday the Dept. of State Health Services reported 1,419 Wood County residents had been tested for COVID-19.

The largest age group testing positive is 41-59 with 77 followed by 60-79 with 71, 21-40 with 49, 80-plus with 44 and 20 for the 0-20 age group.

The cases include 147 females and 114 males.

All but three of the cases are considered community spread.

Mineola cases rose from 64 to 108, Winnsboro from 46 to 52, Quitman from 25 to 35, Alba from 22 to 28, Yantis from 15 to 17 and Hawkins remained at 15 with four in Golden.
