Countywide broadband project approved
Wood County commissioners approved a $2.5 million proposal from Peoples Telephone last Tuesday to expand rural broadband internet services.
The funds are part of the American Rescue Plan, dollars targeted for COVID-relief efforts.
Six projects will be funded, with at least one in each commissioner precinct.
The first is in the Lake Fork area east and north of Alba.
The second is on the east side of Lake Holbrook.
The third is in an area north of Mineola on the west side of Hwy. 37 at County Road 2320.
The fourth is around Lake Hawkins.
The fifth is east of Quitman, north of Hwy. 154 around FM 312.
The sixth is south of FM 2088 at County Road 4590 south-southeast of Winnsboro.
The project areas were identified as middle or last mile of fiber lines or wireless networks which typically would not be constructed by private companies due to the low return on investment (high cost versus few customers).
