COVID-19 closes Quitman schools a week

Quitman ISD schools have been closed this week due to COVID-19 protocols. A letter was sent home to parents and guardians last Friday explaining the week.

The action comes as a result of multiple staff members at the elementary campus who have tested positive for coronavirus.

Superintendent Rhonda Turner said, “We had extra minutes built in so we are going to do online learning Monday through Wednesday and we will have student holidays for Thursday and Friday. We had those extra minutes built in just in case COVID-19 would impact our ability to have face-to-face instruction.”

In the Friday letter, Turner stated, “The impact from staff illness and quarantining is significant enough that we do not have personnel to monitor all students. Due to this we have made the difficult decision to close our campuses next week. While the secondary campuses have sufficient staff, we recognize the need in many families to have older siblings supervise younger siblings, consequently the junior high and high school will also move to at-home learning.”

A letter sent home and on the school website stated regular classes will resume Monday, Nov. 3. Extra-curricular events for junior high and high school will continue when possible. The football game against Troup is still on for Friday night at Bud Moody Field, which will also be senior night. The Bulldog varsity football team will wrap up the season at West Rusk Nov. 6. Volleyball completed its season at Winona last Friday.
