Damage limited from twin tornadoes Friday

Wood County was squarely in the cross hairs Friday afternoon when a pair of tornado warnings were issued for parts of the county.

Schools in Mineola and Hawkins delayed releasing students until the danger passed, and the Wood County Junior Livestock Show postponed its auction – the show’s final event – until Thursday, April 17 at the Quitman schools ag center.

Both tornadoes damaged some buildings and homes.

The first storm, later identified as an EF-0 tornado, touched down just east of Canton, crossing Highway 80 east of Grand Saline.

It stayed on the ground for nine miles, lifting north of Silver Lake, about the time it was entering Wood County.

The storm continued to track across the Alba-Golden area toward Lake Fork, northwest of Quitman.

Soon after, another storm spawned a tornado that was caught on video and began doing damage in the area north of Lindale. The city of Lindale sustained severe flooding.

The Hawkins area sustained serious damage, including multiple trees downed resulting in numerous power outages and some buildings damaged. Most of those power outages were back in service over the weekend.

Despite the severe weather, the only injury reported was a truck driver at the Ozarka water bottling plant north of Hawkins, which sustained some damage to vehicles and buildings.

That storm was ranked as an EF-1 and tracked for 20 miles at a width of 1,420 yards. It lifted north of Lake Gilmer.

Much of its track was difficult to trace as it was in areas without many roads.
