Delayed runoff Tuesday for sheriff, commissioner

Wood County voters will decide two runoff elections Tuesday, July 14.

The Wood County sheriff’s race and the contest for Prec. 1 commissioner both ended with a runoff after the Republican primary March 3.

With no Democrats running locally, the runoff winners will be unopposed for the jobs during the Nov. 3 general election.

Sheriff Tom Castloo faces a challenge from Quitman Police Chief Kelly Cole.

Castloo is seeking a second term. Cole was just 118 votes shorts of winning the primary without a runoff in March. He polled 48.7% of the vote to Castloo’s 40.1%. James Schaffner and Callie Carrell-Lawrence split the remaining votes.

Castloo won the job in a runoff four years ago.

Virgil Holland is seeking a third term as commissioner and faces Keith Gilbreath for the third straight election cycle.

Gilbreath won the post 12 years ago but was defeated by Holland in 2012 and again in a rematch in 2016.

Holland polled 43.8% of the vote and Gilbreath 34.6% in the three-man primary in March.

The Republican primary does not have any statewide races, while Democratic Party voters will decide their November nominee for two state races between Royce West and Mary “MJ” Hegar for United State Senate and Roberto R. “Beto” Alonzo and Chrysta Castañeda for railroad commissioner.

The runoff was originally scheduled May 26 and was postponed as part of the efforts to stem the spread of COVID-19.

At the end of early voting on Monday, 2,068 Wood County voters had cast ballots. There are 31,019 voters registered in the county. The sheriff’s race drew 9,299 voters in March and the commissioner’s race 2,828.

Early voting continues through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the elections office in Quitman.

Voting hours on Election Day next Tuesday are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. On Election Day voters must cast ballots in their respective precincts, although some precincts have been combined for the runoff.

Voting precincts 1-1, 3-1, 4-1 and 4-4 will vote at the Carroll Green Civic Center in Quitman.

Precinct 1-2 will vote at the Yantis Community Center.

Precincts 1-3 and 1-4 will vote at the Alba Community Center.
