East Texas Elite baseball champs raise cancer funds

The East Texas Elite baseball team, with players and coaches from Mineola and elsewhere, won first place in the Strike Out Cancer baseball tournament Aug. 3-4 in Wills Point.

Not only did the 9- and 10-year-olds bring home gold rings, they helped raise money to fight childhood cancer.

The tournament was the first of what will be an annual event in memory of Austin Schultz, 9, an avid baseball fan from Canton who always dreamed of playing. He passed away in June from medullablastoma.

The #AustinStrong nonprofit will donate funds from Strike Out Cancer tournaments to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Camp Quality Texas and Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.
