After a close first half, Edgewood varsity boys pulled away in the second half to put away Quitman with a 72-56 win in District 12-3A play last Tuesday at Ballard Gym.

In the first quarter neither team was able to get more than a three-point lead, an Edgewood 5-2 advantage early. Ryle Flanagan had a put back on a missed Bulldog shot and added a free throw with 4:30 left in the quarter to make it 5-5.

Quitman gained a 9-7 lead on an Aiden Corrior bucket, but Edgewood came right back to knot the score at 9-9. Quitman’s Jace Reid hit a pair of free throws to make it an 11-9 lead. Edgewood came back to take a 13-12 lead, but again Reid hit a pair of charity tosses to make it 14-13 for Quitman. A free throw by Edgewood made it 14-14 after one quarter.

Quitman darted out to a 23-18 lead on a pair of free throws by Ford Tannebaum followed by two more from the charity stripe by Reid to make it 25-19. Edgewood came back to take a 27-26 lead. Edgewood had a 32-31 lead as time in the half was winding down when Trey Berry made a steal and passed to Flanagan who hit a lay-up at the buzzer giving Quitman a 33-32 lead at the half.

Edgewood came out in the second half to gain a 22-14 third quarter edge for a 54-47 lead going into the final quarter. Quitman fought back gamely in the final period but could not gain any ground as Edgewood took the game 72-56.

Reid led Quitman with 25 points followed by Berry with 10 and Flanagan nine.

The loss drops Quitman to 1-1 in district action and 11-10 for the year.
