The state’s eighth-ranked Edgewood Bulldogs came out on top of the Battle of the Bulldogs with an 80-33 win over Quitman last Tuesday night.
It was Edgewood’s experienced upper classmen taking on a young Quitman team who at times had three freshmen and a pair of sophomores on the floor.
Led by the shooting of sophomore Jace Reid, Quitman played Edgewood close in the first quarter. Reid hit a pair of threes and finished the quarter with eight points. Edgewood’s Trey Erwin came out firing as he scored 10 of his team’s 14 first quarter points as Edgewood took a 14-12 lead in to the second quarter.
In the second quarter, the Edgewood full court pressure hounded Quitman forcing multiple turnovers as they would out score Quitman 24-7 in the second stanza.
Edgewood darted out to a 20-12 lead, but another Reid triple moved Quitman to within 20-15, but that would be as close as the home team would get the rest of the game. Edgewood’s Nobel Smith scored eight consecutive points on a short jumper and two treys sparking the visitors on offense. Edgewood then took a 38-19 lead into the halftime break.
In the second half Edgewood started blistering hot from long range as they hit seven of their nine total three pointers during that span. Doing most of the damage was point guard Brayden Allen who hit five treys in the final half including three in a row in the fourth quarter. He would end the evening leading all scorers with 28 points. Edgewood outscored Quitman 42-14 in the second half to secure the win.
Quitman was led by Reid’s 13 points and freshman Kalen Wilkerson with nine points. The 6’6” freshmen was a bright spot for Quitman as he also blocked five shots and had numerous rebounds and went five out of six from the free throw line.
Quitman will host Grand Saline this Friday with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.
