Explorers program open to Wood County youth
For children 14-20 interested in law enforcement, Wood County Explorers Program would be a great learning opportunity for them.
The program meets the first Monday of each month at 6 p.m. at Armed Texans, 369 County Road 2784 in Mineola. Youth should attend with a parent or guardian.
The career-oriented program gives teens and young adults the opportunity to gain exposure to various criminal justice careers by working with local law enforcement agencies.
Members get classroom training and hands-on experience in field exercises, weaponry, community policing, and participate in a ride-along in police vehicles.
The program teaches leadership skills and problem solving and enhances character development and self-confidence while focusing on community involvement.
Wood County Explorers assist with putting out flags for the Mineola Kiwanis Club on holidays. On Memorial Day weekend at Lake Holbrook, they provide food and cook for sheriff’s deputies, troopers, fire marshal’s office, and other local law enforcement. They also have a dive and beach clean-up that weekend.
